Becoming a Referee

Interested in becoming a referee? Refereeing is a rewarding career path, and a great way to stay in the game! There are plenty of people at Rugby Ontario willing to help get you started. 

How to Become a Referee

  1. Visit the World Rugby Passport website and complete the World Rugby Rugby Ready Program and the Laws of the Game Examinations.
  2. Contact Rugby Ontario Rugby Development Manager Greg Haley-Williams to determine if a course is coming up in your area. Please include your Rugby Ready and Laws of the Game Examination certificates of completion on this initial email.
  3. Sign up for WhosTheRef, Rugby Ontario’s Online Appointments Database.
  4. Attend local referee development sessions.
  5. Attend a local referee certification course.
  6. Register with Rugby Ontario / Rugby Canada. (*Please note, the national registration system will be ready by the end of February; Rugby Canada and Rugby Ontario are currently in the process of updating the system.*)
  7. Start refereeing games!

Refereeing is a great way to be involved in the game, meet new people, stay fit, and have fun. Don't miss out on your opportunity to have the best seat in the house!

ONLINE REGISTRATION


The 2015 online registration system is nearing completion. All members of Rugby Canada will be asked to register online for the 2015 season. FULL TIME Rugby Ontario Referees will be asked to register through this portal. Club-registered referees should continue to register through their club, selecting the referee option when prompted. If no option is offered through the online portal, contact your club registrar to ensure this is done correctly.
