RUGBY ONTARIO ANNOUNCES TRYOUT INFORMATION FOR 2015 JUNIOR PROVINCIAL REPRESENTATIVE FIFTEENS PROGRAM

Rugby Ontario is pleased to announce key details, including tryout information, projected costs, and competition dates for our 2015 Junior Provincial Representative Fifteens Program.

REVAMPED PROVINCIAL TEAM SELECTION MODEL

Rugby Ontario is implementing a revamped, regionally-focused junior high performance development model for the upcoming provincial rugby season. This new model will allow more athletes from across the province to train in a high performance setting, without the need for all program athletes to travel to the GTA every week.

Starting in 2015, Rugby Ontario’s junior provincial representative fifteens program will be operating under a new regional hub model. Rugby Ontario has established three regional centres across Ontario: Eastern Ontario, Central Ontario and Western Ontario.

These hub centres will focus on athlete skill development and includes a robust regionalized training schedule prior to full provincial team selection. The hub model will serve as the pathway for Ontario athletes to make national age-grade teams via the Ontario Provincial team.

Each regional hub team will select between 22-25 players for their summer training squad. Following three weekends of training, each regional hub team will meet at the Rugby Ontario Provincial Team Selection Camp in Port Hope, ON (July 26). From there, 20 individuals from each age grade will be selected for each provincial team.

Canada East Regional Championships

As part of Rugby Canada’s overhaul of their national championships structure, this summer will see the annual National Championships Festival replaced with new regionally-focused championships.

In 2015, Ontario’s Under-16 Men, Under-18 Women and Under-18 Men’s provincial teams will participate the
Canada East Regional Championships. Ontario and Quebec will play each other in a two-game series in Montreal (July 31 – Aug. 3), where the top athletes from this competition will also be identified for respective national team camps. In 2016, the Atlantic Provinces have committed to entering Atlantic regional teams at the tournament, however, for this upcoming summer, the tournament will only feature the provincial teams of Ontario and Quebec.

Other Junior Provincial Programming

In light of not having a National Championship structure in place for our Under-17 Men, Under-16 Women and Under-15 Men’s programs, Ontario and British Columbia have committed to developing an annual Ontario-British Columbia Test Series for these three age grades. Starting in 2015, Ontario and British Columbia will play each other in a two-game test series for each of these age grades. Ontario will host this event for the tournament’s first two years.

This summer, the Ontario-British Columbia Test Series will be played at Twin Elm Rugby Park in Ottawa (July 30 – Aug. 2).

REGIONAL HUB BOUNDARIES

The Rugby Ontario Junior Provincial Representative Fifteens Program boundaries have been established to ensure that each regional hub has access to an approximate equal number of athletes within their respective catchment areas.

- Those who live in Belleville and east of Belleville fall into the East Hub catchment area;
- Those who live west of Belleville, but east of Mississauga, fall into the Central Hub catchment area;
- Those who live in Mississauga and west of Mississauga fall into the West Hub catchment area

The following chart allocates Ontario rugby clubs that run junior programs into their respective regional hubs:
