RUGBY ONTARIO ANNOUNCES FULL DETAILS FOR 2016 JUNIOR PROVINCIAL REPRESENTATIVE FIFTEENS PROGRAM

Rugby Ontario is pleased to announce full details, including program structure, tryout dates and venues, costs, coaching lists, selection criteria, and competition dates, for our 2016 Junior Provincial Representative Fifteens Program.

The 2016 Junior Provincial Representative Fifteens Program will include the following age grades:

- Under-18 Women
- Under-16 Women
- Under-18 Men
- Under-17 Men
- Under-16 Men
- Under-15 Men

DECENTRALIZED HUB PROVINCIAL TEAM IDENTIFICATION AND DEVELOPMENT MODEL:

Rugby Ontario will once again be using a regionally-focused junior high performance identification and development model for the upcoming provincial rugby season. First implemented in 2015, the decentralized hub model will allow more athletes from across the province to train in a high performance setting without the need for all program athletes to travel to the GTA every week.

Rugby Ontario has established three regional centres across Ontario: Ontario East, Ontario Central and Ontario West. These hub centres will focus on athlete skill development and include a robust regionalized training schedule prior to full provincial team selection. The hub model will serve as the pathway for Ontario athletes to make national age-grade teams via the Ontario provincial team. The purpose of this program is to allow more players to be developed and engage in game opportunities to be identified to represent full provincial age-grade teams at national competitions.

The program will consist two tryouts per hub: an open tryout, followed by a closed invitational tryout. From these two tryouts, a squad of 24 will be selected at each age group in each hub.

Hub training squads will then have four training sessions and two inter-hub games (all hub teams play against each other). A squad of 24 players in each age group will be selected to attend a provincial training weekend and then to represent the province at national competitions held in Markham from Aug. 15-21.

The 2016 Under-18 Canadian Rugby Championship will feature Ontario’s Under-18 Men’s and Women’s teams, the 2016 Under-16 National Festival will feature Ontario’s Under-16 Men’s and Women’s teams and Under-15 Men’s Team, and the 2016 Ontario-British Columbia Test Series will feature Ontario’s Under-17 Men’s team.

National competitions at each age grade (excluding the Ontario-British Columbia Test Series) will feature teams representing provinces from across Canada.

This provincial program is a pathway for players to not only to be developed through training and competition, but also to be identified by Rugby Canada to attend national camps.
